WiFi Vs. LiFi:
Internet is perhaps the sixth classical element and has become as essential for today’s technologically-advanced man’s existence as the other five elements: Fire, Earth, Metal, Water, and Wood. Thus, the idea of information and data sharing is not new and has become a mundane matter for us.
Moreover, today’s man (the ‘busy monster’ as the poet E. E. Cummings puts it) is so busy that he continues to crave for the technology that promises more speed and swiftness. Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity) and Li-Fi (Light Fidelity) are two such technologies, from the category of wireless communication sector, which have revolutionized the experience of data sharing.
Comparatively, Li-Fi is the latest wireless communication device, which is invented with the purpose to redress the demerits that Wi-Fi possesses. In contrast to Wi-Fi’s dependence on radio waves, Li-Fi consumes LEDs and other light sources and since the capacity of light is 10000 times broader than radio waves, therefore the capability and speed of Li-Fi are excellent. From the fiscal perspective, LED lights, the engine of Li-Fi, intake less energy, thus the cost of Li-Fi is relatively lower. Since lights can be found anywhere, the accessibility ratio of Li-Fi is also higher and easier. Moreover, there are rare chances of Li-Fi being seized and misused by unauthorized users because light waves could not travel through the walls.
Though Li-Fi has good capacity, is low-cost, efficient in speed, secure, and more accessible than Wi-Fi, but its connection has risks of inconsistency in the spaces without LED light. Therefore, there are likely chances that the Li-Fi connection will be disturbed in the presence of external light sources, such as normal bulbs and sunlight. Thus, Li-Fi is not a safe wireless connection to pick for any kind of outdoor usage. It is clear that the workings of Li-Fi are in an absolute opposition to the mechanisms of Wi-Fi, therefore Li-Fi can prove to be a perfect substitute for Wi-Fi for using in indoors and the places where Wi-Fi is banned.
